A major UK retailer had identified that several of its core markets were facing significant disruption and wanted to proactively develop the ‘intrapreneurial’ ability to disrupt its own business models, ahead of new and emerging competitors.
The Cambridge Value Generation Tool set was deployed as part of a program to develop an internal team with the capabilities, advanced skills and confidence to lead business model driven innovation. New business ideas and models were developed as part of the process, and the team additionally learnt new and effective ways to communicate and engage with their colleagues across the wider business..
During the process, the implementation tool set was used to create and test new businesses, with advanced business models. It also helped to establish business cases for evaluation in line with existing decision parameters. This work enabled strategic transformation of multiple elements of the business, from product to services. One of the three new businesses created as a result of the implementation of the Cambridge Value Generation Tools was estimated to have the potential to deliver £3 billion of new revenues.
“We benefited from everyone involved in key decisions having a common level of understanding. The tools gave us a systems-centric view of decisions, forcing ideas to be challenged and overcoming the repetitive revisiting of decisions”
